60ft whale washed up on beach thought to be remains of rare fin whale

A dog walker was left stunned after he stumbled upon a 60ft whale washed up on the beach. The decomposed carcass of the huge mammal was found at Wanson Mouth beach near Widemouth Bay, Cornwall. Marine biologists are examining the remains of the animal, which they believe could be an endangered fin whale, although due to decay it can not been confirmed. Ado Shorland, of Widemouth Task Force, who was walking his dog when he found the 45 ton monster, said: "The lower jaw has been detached and alone it is about 5 metres. It is a very large whale. "From a distance I thought it to be a large tarp or mesh netting. When I realised it was a whale I was excited and saddened at the same time. "I felt humbled to be honest, the sheer size suggests it to be an adult, and alive it would have been such a majestic mammal." Fin whales can grow as big as 90 feet long and weigh as much as 70 tons. They are common to all oceans, particularly the north Atlantic. The mammals were heavily hunted during the last two centuries and are classed as an endangered species.
